Kohl’s to shutter 27 stores across the country. What does that mean for Arizona?

Kohl’s announced Thursday that it would close 27 underperforming stores in 15 states by April 2025.

The Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin-based retail giant saw sales drop during 2024, and Kohl’s stock price has fallen by over 50% in the last 12 months.

The department store operates around 1,150 locations across the county, and the closures will affect less than 3% of its stores.

The announcement comes less than a week before Kohl’s undergoes a CEO transition. Outgoing CEO Tom Kingsbury said in the release that the closures are for the future health of the business.

“We always take these decisions very seriously,” Kingsbury said.

Here’s how the closures will affect stores in Arizona.

Are Kohl’s in Arizona closing?

No Arizona stores were on the list of soon-to-be-shuttered stores. California had the most stores on the list, with 10 locations.

More big chain stores are closing

Kohl’s is part of a larger chain of big box stores shutting their doors.

Big Lots has closed 24 stores in Arizona since July, but a recent deal leaves the fate of the remaining stores in question. In December, Party City said it will close all its stores, including 15 in Arizona.

Craft retailer Joann announced 8 closures nationwide after it filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in March. Macy’s will close its Mesa, Arizona location as part of a plan to close 65 stores across the country.
