Sam Fox Hotel Project Heads to Phoenix City Council for Approval Article originally posted on Phoenix Business Journal on November 18, 2019 Phoenix City Council is set to decide this week the fate of a mixed-use project that will include a hotel developed by popular Valley restaurateur Sam Fox. A 17-acre project, known as 44|Camelback, would be on the northwest corner of 44th Street and Camelback Road. Phoenix-based Red Development, which is the project’s master developer, has said the entire development would cost $300 million. Council will consider the project at its Nov. 20 meeting. The proposed project includes a hotel, a five-story Class A office building, parking structure, a four-story office building with ground-floor retail, a two-story office building, a self-storage facility and the Phoenix Suns/Phoenix Mercury practice facility. Fox’s five-story boutique hotel, which will not be part of his Fox Restaurant Concepts company recently purchased by the Cheesecake Factory, is slated to have 85 rooms and 20 residential condos. The 140,000-square-foot hotel will include guest rooms on the second, third and fourth levels. The residence condos will be on the fifth floor, and there will be a rooftop restaurant/lounge that will have indoor and outdoor elements. The hotel’s ground floor will have a restaurant as well as conference and banquet space. The second floor will include a spa and fitness center. “Located at one of the most high-profile intersections in the Valley, this $300 million development is being thoughtfully designed by local companies with proven track records for building extraordinary developments and being good stewards of our community,” Red Development Managing Partner Mike Ebert said in a statement. “Our vision is for this to be a point of pride for east Phoenix neighborhoods.” Currently, the property is an aging office park that Red proposes to demolish and rebuild. It is going before Council because plans call for constructing two buildings 75 feet tall, while current zoning only allows for buildings up to 56 feet tall. The project has been criticized by some area residents who claiming it will be too tall and will set a precedent of taller building in the neighborhood, which could block views of Camelback Mountain.
