State Land Auction 2025

A site once coveted by Phoenix’s defunct NHL team for an arena complex is expected to be sold at auction in the coming months.

Approximately 217 acres is scheduled to be auctioned on June 20 by the Arizona State Land Department, according to a notice filed on the department’s website. An opening bid has been set at $110 million for the parcel, which includes acreage once eyed by the Arizona Coyotes before its last-ditch plans to build an arena complex in the Valley came to a screeching halt.

Mortenson, a Minnesota-based developer, has applied to acquire the 217 acres located west of North Scottsdale Road and north of Loop 101 on the cusp of Northeast Phoenix and Scottsdale. While the Minnesota-based developer has no immediate plans, it sees the parcel as a potential site for mixed-use development. A portion of the 217 acres is currently zoned for low-density farm or residential uses, according to a city of Phoenix zoning map.
