Freeway Interchange

As Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co.’s $165 billion chipmaking complex in north Phoenix continues to expand and developers start to launch major projects all around it, a busy freeway interchange in the vicinity is getting an upgrade to match the growth.

Work is underway in earnest on the main component of a $129 million project to build an interchange at the Loop 303 and Interstate 17 that will include four direct-connecting ramps and added lanes between the two freeways in all directions. The work will relieve congestion that currently occurs in the area, where drivers from each freeway back up as they wait for traffic lights to get onto the other.

Initial work started a few weeks ago around the interchange, in the wake of the January completion of widening of the northbound I-17 exit ramp at Sonoran Desert Drive, where drivers get on to the 303. Loop 303 will connect to Sonoran Desert Drive with a frontage road that links to North 43rd Avenue when the new project is complete.

Work on the interchange is expected to take two and a half years to complete, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation. As construction gets into full swing, drivers can expect lane restrictions and full closures of both freeways, as well as adjacent roads — primarily during overnight hours and weekends, ADOT said.
