McCarthy Building Cos. has started work on its 12-acre employee training campus in Tempe.

The employee-owned, Missouri-based construction company is turning a former DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel, located at the southwest corner of Broadway Road and Priest Drive, into the McCarthy Anchor Campus. It will serve as a centralized learning hub and hotel for use by its 8,000 employees nationwide with an anticipated opening date in early 2028.

SmithGroup is the architect for the project, and Pyramid Global Hospitality will manage the campus and guests under its PyramidWorks division.

“Our people are the most important thing, which a lot of companies say. We’re backing that up by saying we’re going to invest in their growth and development because it helps us attract and retain and grow top talent, which for us, is a major differentiator,” said R.J. Morris, the senior vice president of the McCarthy Anchor Campus.
McCarthy Anchor Campus will operate throughout the year for new employee orientation, skill-based and milestone-based programs, and management and leadership programs, Morris said.

McCarthy paid $27.5M to acquire hotel building

The campus will have a 257-room hotel, a conference center, flexible classrooms and breakout spaces. It will also have amenities including a restaurant, walking trail, fitness center, putting green, fire pits, covered outdoor seating and pickleball and basketball courts — all providing opportunities for employees to connect with one another.

“We really want to focus in not only on learning, but also the connection,” Morris said about the campus’s amenities. “We think it’s really important for our teams to be close, but also meet people from other parts of the country, share best practices, build informal relationships, and to do that, we wanted to set up a social infrastructure that allows that to happen.”
