More Housing, Mill Ave Improvements Among Priorities for Tempe Officials

As Tempe looks to meet the needs of today and tomorrow, Mayor Corey Woods said the city will have to grow up, rather than out, during his State of the City address on Friday.

Woods, who gave his speech at the newly opened Omni Tempe Hotel at Arizona State University, said there are a lot of projects in the pipeline. Citing a community survey conducted this year, Woods said Tempe residents ranked improving the lives of those who are unhoused as the top concern. As a way to bridge the gap to meet more affordable housing needs, Woods said the city got to work on increasing the number of housing units.

The Business Journal reported in September on several new housing projects that either received approval from Tempe City Council or were set to be heard on an upcoming agenda. In total, Woods said, plans for more than 3,500 units were approved in 2023. Another 13,500 units remain in various stages of the community development process.
