David Hovey Jr. has been crazy busy these days. He just received approval to begin work on Optima McDowell Mountain Village, a new $1 billion luxury community in north Scottsdale, at a time when he’s opening the fifth and final tower at his popular Optima Kierland development.

That final piece, 7190 Optima Kierland, is a 10-story tower totaling 216 apartments that is expected to be finished by the end of September. Residents are moving in on the fourth floor this month, and the building is already 40% leased.

“Some people reserved units on the top floor,” said Hovey, president, chief operating officer and principal architect for Optima Inc.

The luxury apartment tower is being built on land on North Scottsdale Road near Kierland Commons formerly occupied by La Maison Interiors, which Hovey bought for $15 million in May 2019, according to Vizzda LLC.

Starting monthly rental rates range from the $2,400s for a studio to the $7,800s for a three-bedroom unit, he said. More than 60% of the three-bedroom units are already leased, he said.
