Phoenix’s Planning Commission Recommends Approval of New Plans for The Central Park

The revamped plans for Pivotal Group Inc.’s The Central Park took a big step forward Dec. 8.

Phoenix’s Planning Commission recommended approval of the project with updated stipulations on a 5-0 vote, but only after a lengthy public comment discussion between commission members, the project’s land-use attorneys and residents. The project will now head to Phoenix City Council, which will likely consider those plans sometime in January.

The 18-acre proposed project is adjacent to Steele Indian School Park on the northeast corner of Central Avenue and Indian School Road.

Much of the neighborhood opposition was centered around Pivotal Group’s updated vision and stipulations it proposed for The Central Park, which had previously been a large office campus with retail and some residential. The new plans include about 245,000 square feet of office space, almost 78,000 square feet of ground-floor retail space that includes an on-site grocery store and 1,450 residences designed in a “walkable, vibrant, mixed-use setting,” project documents state.
