Electric vehicle maker Rivian Automotive Inc. has received a key approval as it plans to open a Scottsdale service and repair facility.

Scottsdale City Council on July 1 voted 6-0 in favor of rezoning a 5.4-acre portion of land to allow the Irvine, California-based auto manufacturer to operate a vehicle service facility at 17771 N. Pima Road within the Mack Innovation Park, which is being developed by Mack Real Estate Group.

The land was previously zoned light industrial, which didn’t permit a vehicle service component, so attorneys for developer Mack Real Estate Group had to request to downzone the parcel to general commercial to accommodate the planned Rivian facility. The Planning Commission voted 6-0 on June 10 recommending approval of the zoning amendment.

“Over the past 10 months, we have worked with the City of Scottsdale along with key members of the community to advance the necessary permitting effort to bring Rivian to our property. We are grateful for the community’s support to bring this goal to reality,” a Mack Real Estate Group spokesperson told the Business Journal.

Rivian did not immediately respond to the Business Journal’s request for comment.

The automaker will take up 65,566 square feet within the 184,960-square-foot building C that was completed in February of this year in the park’s first phase, along with building D. Both buildings total 305,000 square feet. Rivian is the first tenant in building C, and Daikin Comfort Technologies, a global HVAC company, is located in building D.
