Silicon in the Spotlight Article originally posted on Phoenix Business Journal on July 11, 2025 When Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. announced plans in 2020 to build a manufacturing campus in north Phoenix, it set off a flurry of foreign investment in the state. It also helped Arizona land the largest semiconductor industry conference in the nation. Just as luring TSMC to the Valley took years of negotiations, landing SEMICON West didn’t happen overnight. In July 2022, a group of city and economic development officials attended SEMICON at the Moscone Convention Center in San Francisco, marking a return to in-person business networking after the pandemic. While there, officials from the Greater Phoenix Economic Council, city of Phoenix and the Arizona Commerce Authority asked Joe Stockunas, president of SEMI Americas, about the possibility of hosting SEMICON West in the Valley, given the state’s growing semiconductor ecosystem. California-based electronics industry design and supply chain organization SEMI Americas regularly lures tens of thousands of attendees to its annual semiconductor gathering.
