Waymo LLC is investing more than $4 million in tenant improvements into its recently opened Tempe office as the company continues to expand in the Phoenix metro, according to building permits filed with the city of Tempe. The subsidiary of Alphabet Inc (Nasdaq: GOOGL). signed a 40,357-square-foot sublease at the Grand2 building at 1033 W. Roosevelt Way, making it the company’s first Phoenix office, beyond its industrial space for its autonomous ride-hailing fleet storage and repairs. Since signing its lease, the company has submitted plans with the city of Tempe for multiple tenant improvements at its new office. The most expensive permit filed with the city of Tempe was submitted June 2 for phase two construction of Suite 230. It was estimated to cost $4,049,500 plus additional fees with Corgan architecture firm listed as the applicant. Another permit was filed four months before that on Feb. 19 to “install access control system” with an estimated cost of $103,000. The first permit — valued at $50,000 — was filed Nov. 20 in preparation for “Phase 2 construction,” including architectural, mechanical and electrical work. Waymo did not immediately respond to the Business Journal’s request for comment about the scope of the $4 million improvements. The self-driving car company moved into the office in March but declined to share how many employees would work out of the space. It instead indicated the office location offers room to grow in the Valley. Waymo also acquired a massive 5,458-acre proving grounds site last month in Surprise for $220 million. Then in May, Waymo announced its fully autonomous operations of its Ojai robotaxis in the Phoenix area. The four-seat robotaxi was designed in partnership with Chinese automaker Geely.
